Preparing kids for smartphones, step by step
Parents are stuck between two unsatisfying options: block everything and leave children unprepared, or hand over a full smartphone too soon.
Together with TBWA, the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, we created Statphone: a free Android launcher that helps children learn to use their first smartphone step by step.

The app
An Android app built around four age-specific levels, gradually unlocking more functionality as children grow in confidence, independence and responsible phone use. Instead of restricting access, it reshapes the smartphone experience around age-appropriate tools, guided choices and a calmer interface.

The levels
Startphone unfolds in four stages, with each level introducing new apps, responsibilities and digital habits. As children grow in age and confidence, the experience expands with them.

Education
Startphone weaves short prompts, tips and conversation starters into the everyday phone experience. Rather than treating digital wellbeing as a separate lesson, it helps children build safer habits in context, while they text, browse, share and explore.

Shared onboarding
Startphone is designed for children and their parents to start the journey together. In a shared onboarding experience for every level, the app facilitates a conversation around phone use. From screen-time moments, to sharing decisions and household rules, the system turns abstract guidance into concrete interactions.

Widgets
The Startphone interface was designed with a young target group in mind. The new startscreen presents options in a calm and focused way with custom functionality like a parent-speeddial, birthday countdown, screentime tracker and educational widgets.
